Why Ghostwriting Is Not Always A Good Thing
2 min readNov 23, 2019
You got a job offer, and it sounds amazing! You will be writing content for a website that is looking for talent and strong writing. You are really excited, but there is a catch that you might not be aware of at the beginning.
Most jobs are going to require you to sign an NDA or Non-Disclosure Agreement. While this might not seem huge, there are some implications to be aware of. Let’s take a quick look at a few!
What NDA’s Can Mean For You
- Non-Compete Agreement — on this section in an NDA, this means that you cannot work for anyone else in similar fields for a particular amount of time, specifically if they are in direct competition with the main client that you are working for. This keeps information from being passed back and forth between companies.
- You cannot claim your work — when you are ghostwriting, anything that you write will not be published under your name. You will not get the credit, and depending on the piece, any future payouts that come from that piece of work.
- You cannot claim this on your portfolio — Since you are ghostwriting and depending on the terms set in an NDA, you are not going to be able to write this into your portfolio, which cuts down on what you can share from your writing.
